review 1: I really enjoyed this book, although you have to be on your toes to keep up with what is happening since the story is not told in chronological order and there are many characters. The main character is Ursula, who lives many different lives. She dies and relives - and the experiences she has are all over the map - -she dies as a baby and on the next page she is alive. She gets married, has a child, is childless, gets murdered, commits suicide and in fact, commits murder as well. Ursula is born in England before World War II, lives through the War and for quite a long time after. My only complaint about the book is it was a little too long - the many lives got a bit tedious at the end. But Kate Atkinson is a very smart woman, a good, good writer and well educated. ... moreAll this is evidence in the book, and her sarcasm has just the right tone and is used in just the right places. Read this book and have fun. Can't wait for her next one.
review 2: I absolutely loved this book, but the concept is very different and unique, and I think a lot of people might hate it. Kate Atkinson definitely has a mastery of character development--it's a requirement of writing something like this. Not only do you get to experience the same characters over and over as Ursela repeats her life, but you get to see how slightly different circumstances change and shape them. Every character was gray. I love how the author drags you slowly to realizations as you read. Even at the very end, things would start to click for me, and I suspect the author planned it just that way--that a reader would read a certain sentence and say, "ooooh", as a lightbulb goes off. The ending was slightly unsatisying, but I don't think it could have been any other way. This book is definitely not a mindless read--I found myself thinking about it all the time while I was reading it, and after I finished. It's a fascinating idea. less
