review 1: This is the first in a new cozy mystery series. Shannon Hammer runs a home renovation and repair business, specializing in Victorian era houses. Her friend decided to help spice up Shannon's love life so she arranges a blind date with Jerry Saxton, a local real estate agent. While the date and dinner starts out nicely, an innocent walk on the beach later turns ugly and and their quarrel and her resulting kick to escape his grasp is witnessed by a number of townspeople from the nearby pier. So when Shannon stumbles over Jerry's dead body in the basement of one of her home renovation projects, the quarrel becomes motive for murder. Can Shannon convince the new Chief of Police that she is innocent? I enjoyed this story and the characters in it. I especially appreciate the str... moreong woman portrayal of Shannon in a more typically male business. It's nice to see women being shown as independent and equally capable of succeeding in a predominantly male industry and rescuing themselves when needed. I look forward to more books in this series.
review 2: Kate Carlisle hammers out a new series with a female carpenter, Shannon Hammer. I really enjoy this series set in a small, northern, and coastal California town. Carlisle creates characters that can be found in any small town, of course not every town has a local pub. The description of the renovations and the carpentry whets an appetite. I would not have believed the Shannon Hammer character if I had not seen episodes of Nicole Curtis in Rehab Addict, and been amazed at Nicole's expertise and hard work. This is not a hastily written novel, but a labor of love of the area and the houses. less
