review 1: It makes me want to bind books. It makes me want to read books. It convinces me that I can live without Robert Burns' poetry. It makes me question whether everybody really does love bagpipes or whether a Kilt might be a liberating experience : This book is set in Edinburgh. Did Robert Burns have a relationship with a Royal Princess ? Did Rabbie write erotic poems about her ? Who killed Kyle ? Who would play Brooklyn and Robin (two great female TV roles there)? If it was actually filmed in Edinburgh it would definitely help the pub trade. Side trip to Rosslyn Chapel - because that place really needs more tourists (not). A pleasant, cosy, slightly formulaic story but still enjoyable and Brooklyn's mother - a chance for real OTT acting. Colonic rinses, Pooper Shooter. This is... more education.
review 2: I thoroughly enjoyed this mystery. Unlike some of the other reviewers,I liked this second one better than the first. I liked the new setting and it was fun seeing Brooklyn try to enjoy Scotland (but being thwarted at every turn by murders, murderous attempts, kidnappings, and snarky contemporaries) as well as trying to figure out her relationship--if there is one--with Derek. I also like the witty interplay between her and her family and I totally understand and appreciate her internal monologues and thought processes (though maybe I shouldn't admit that?). Anyway, I am now officially hooked on this series and am glad that I already have #3 to jump right into! less
