review 1: Kate Furnivall is my favorite author right now. I love everything she has written, and The White Pearl is no different.I love the description Furnivall uses to describe the setting and the characters. I felt connected to Malaya and the south Pacific, as well as to her characters. I also really like how she does not end her stories "happily ever after," even though, technically, I guess they did ride off into the sunrise at the end of this one! This story made me want to jump on a boat anywhere and have an adventure. I loved it.
review 2: I have read Furnivall's older books like The Russian Concubine · The Concubines Secret · The Jewel Of St Petersburg (a different trilogy, ok, I must say good written) and now I expected to see what was all the story about the
... more White Pearl. Well in great expectations we have poor reality. Maybe in strange way I expected White Pearl to be like the Diamond of Nile, a human. It was a ship, ok, well there was love story, there was danger, even the pirates' emerald island. But it was a book I call "tired". When the writer takes a good story but feels so tired to vivid it. So you see an adventure novel which groans in every page. And what about the final person in Darwin who jumbs in the story and you say "what? what was that?" The story of the "lively" woman who goes in a strange country, has a lovely kid from a cruel (secretly homosexual) husband so that why she has a lover blah, blah, blah is too usual, I've read it in several other stories. I hope Furnivall's next book to be a fresh one... less
