review 1: This book started out so promising, and then went slowly, very slowly downhill for me. Great initial story about a girl trying to find her father in war torn Germany during WW2. Then at about page 300 they started into this ridiculous teenage love story about her and this Chinese guy. At first this was very minimal and they it started to be a bigger and bigger part of the book...I struggled through to about page 450 and finally just had to put the book down and walk away. I just couldn't take the stupid love story. It was very juvenile and seemed so far removed from the rest of the story, almost like it was a more junior writer "adding in" their part. So I didn't finish but got 90% done. Such is life.
review 2: I adore Chang An Lo!!!! *actual review*may contain... more spoilers*I enjoyed this book! Not nearly as much as the Russian Concubine. I did not race through GFJ as quickly as I did RC and for awhile I though Furnivall was going to break up one of my new favorite literary couples! So I promptly dropped the book and flailed about for a bit with about 50 pages left to go. But when I picked it back up again, I sailed through. The ending was appropriate, albeit as romantically distressing as it seemed the last one was. The conflict in the romance seemed a bit forced. I hate when authors try and question a perfectly good relationship! Leave them be! That being said, I enjoyed Alexi's transition from petulance to independence, and I enjoyed the secondary cast of characters. Lydia was her headstrong self as usual, and it was interesting that the author would go as far as to have a character say that Lydia destroyed everything she touched. It was completely true and it seemed to be a character choice an I could appreciate it as such, even though I did not like that aspect of her. less
