review 1: I found this book to be a very interesting read. It has many layers; one of which is autism. The author gives a good amount of time to the characteristics of this disease in one of her major characters. Other subjects I noted are: archeology in Egyptian tombs, unexpected romance, parental neglect/favoritism/adoption, seances, family relationships/dynamics and a mystery. The author is English and that permeates her book. It was a great read after I caught on to the flow of the book.
review 2: This was a couple of interesting stories in one, but they meshed oddly, too much going on. It's a historical novel set in England and Egypt in the early 1900s, about a young woman whose beloved, difficult little brother (we'd call him autistic now) was made to mysterio
... moreusly disappear by her parents when she was about 7. He was replaced by a charming adoptive brother. She grew to love him too, but never stopped missing her other brother. Now they're in their early 20s, and her adoptive brother has also disappeared. Seances, Sherlock Homes, and Egyptian and colonial politics feature as well. She sets on a journey to Egypt to try to find him. The threads about her original brother and the adoptive one reconnect, though in a convoluted manner, with some action adventure thrown in that. Well written but needed its threads pared down to be more to my taste, and the siblings' purportedly strong connections to each other didn't quite ring true. less

The beginning was rather slow but it picked up. I still like her books set in Russia best.
