review 1: This book is about a little girl named Anabelle who was sick and tired of the boring birthday parties. Her birthday was coming up and she wanted it to be very special. She wanted to spend her birthday on the moon. Her dad wasn't all for the idea and he suggested have a magician party or a pizza party. These ideas just weren't good enough for Annabelle and she stuck with the idea of the moon birthday party. She got down to business, she built a rocket ship but it wouldn't work. They then hired out an astronaut, who rented them a rocket ship that Anabelle and her guests could take to the moon. They landed on the moon, ready to get the party started. Once they landed, everything went wrong. The candles on the cake wouldn't light, so they decided to dance. When they danced the... morey stirred up to much moon dust and the cake got all dirty. Anabelle opened up her presents, her favorite one was a polka-dotted dress. She tried this dress on over her bulky moon suit and the dress ripped right down the middle. Nothing was going right, her birthday turned into a disaster, and everyone just wanted to go back to planet Earth. Next year rolled around and Anabelle decided to stay on the ground. Anabelle made a pirate ship where her friends played all day. Her birthday was a success, and everyone had a blast. I enjoyed this book because of the creativity of the story and the pictures, they were so fun to look at. I would read this book to children ages kindergarten to second grade. Since there are so many children in a classroom and they have different birthdays, I would read it on my birthday. I would then ask the kids to think of something they would want to do for their birthday. I would then have them right a story about it and illustrate it as well. Hosford, Kate, and Holly Brown. Big birthday. Minneapolis: Carolrhoda Books, 2012. Print.
review 2: I loved the illustrations, but I felt like the rhyme flow was off in places and that threw me. I also agree with other reviewers that the gravity/oxygen issues on the moon could have been explained a little so the child reader wouldn't be confused about why, for instance, the birthday candles wouldn't light. I also was a little annoyed with Annabelle's attitude- she came off rather whiny. I did like the purple pirate ship, though. Purple pirate ships are always awesome. less
