review 1: I will start with the fact that the book summery is a bit misleading...there is nothing scary or horror about this book. The "villain" had potential, but the author failed to deliver. There are several comments by the characters claiming that she is sinister and evil, but you don't ever really get to see it and her climatic "demise" is nothing more that a deflated fizzle. There are numerous parts of the book that bring questions to your mind, but they are NEVER answered (getting the questions answered was the only reason I kept reading to the end). I will say that the ending was emotional and tugged on my heart appropriately (that's why I gave the second star), but still left me saying, "That's it?"I think Maruyama has potential as an author, but needs help with the climax... more of a story to satisfy her readers.
review 2: Michael comes home after a business trip to his wife and newborn son, Tim. He feels guilt over not being there with this wife during her labor and finds that she is acting odd. She won't talk about the labor, she at first doesn't allow him to touch his son, Greta, the Douala seems to command his home more than him (including drinking from his daddy coffee mug), and she doesn't want him to answer the phone from his sister. I thought that the big secret was going to be revealed at the end and then realized that that wasn't very realistic, so I understand the description more now. I had a hard time deciding between 3 and 4 stars. I like answers and this book didn't provide all of them, the reader is just supposed to be in the story, not know why any of it is happened. I really wish there was more explanation in the book, but that it just my personal opinion. The narrative is split between Michael and his wife Sarah, and I liked her portions, she gave more "answers" than his section. The ending just kinds of comes up, it isn't a happy ending, but it isn't necessarily a sad one either. Overall I don't feel that I wasted my time, I did enjoy the book. less

Very strange story. Would have worked better as a short story rather than a novel.
