review 1: You know when I book puts on paper truths that you've already known deep down in your gut? That is what Milford's work does for me. She writes fantasy that tells you about the inner truths of our history. She creates intriguing characters and compellingly weaves the heart of our history with the alternate version she has created. She taps into the forgotten tales and overlooked individuals that define the story as well as those we already know of.
review 2: This book is strange, in both the subject-matter and the writing. The story sounds as if it's tailored for middle schoolers -- it's clumsy. However, it discusses issues for an older audience, from racism to prostitution. I feel like the fantasy elements were a bit overdone, though I liked the way they wer... moree grounded in historical context and folklore. It seemed, too, that the author was attempting to create strong female characters, but they came off as timid and ineffectual in some moments. Overall, not a very strong book. less
