review 1: Read this for our book group. I didn't finish it by the time we held our meeting to discuss it, so I heard a few spoilers, but persisted with it nonetheless, and was glad I did. Things came to a satisfying conclusion. I thought it was better than The Forgotten Garden. Characterization of the protagonist ("Laurel" -- referred to by her relatives as "LOL", which was a bit disconcerting) felt thin and cartoonish to me, but a bit better for the historic characters.

... morekes me have to read a bit more thoroughly and that's a good thing as I tend to rush through a story. I have to admit that I sometimes take a quick glance at the end, but not this one. I totally didn't see what was coming and I love that about her stories. And historical fiction? What's not to love! less
