review 1: When I first started this book, I was really excited. I could just tell this was going to be a great story! There was action, history, and a mystery. What could be more entertaining? Yet, as I read further, my enthusiasm weakened. I felt like I was constantly having to read through a fog of questions: WHO is this new character? WHAT does the codex have to do with anything? WHEN will Mosse provide actual historical markers for her readers? WHERE exactly are the characters now? And, finally, WHY did I spend money on this book? To say that Mosse writes historical fiction is to define it in the loosest sense of the word. The inclusion of the codex and the accompanying mystical vibe made the historicity of this book feel cheap. It just didn’t mesh. For a while, I was entertai... morened by this story, but ultimately I did not feel satisfied with the investment of my time and money.
review 2: Not as good as the Labyrinth. It hit all the targets, utilized all the devices for enticing the reader, visited all the spots in the Languedoc/Roussillon, and even threw in an ancient codex and some ghosts -- much closer to Dan Brown on the historical novel spectrum than Angle of Repose by Wallace Stegner (one of my greats). I felt the novel lacked passion for the subject, the locale, and the characters. It should have been a real emotional roller coaster ride. See Le Silence de la Mer by Vercors: simplicity itself, no, gimmicks, but got to the root of WWII in France on a human level. less
