review 1: This book helped me examine some of my core beliefs about money. It was surprising and enlightening to reset some of my ideas after reading the book. The author has a friendly and engaging style but her story isn't easily transferable in terms of experience. If you're looking for a how-to book on wealth she makes it clear that this isn't the book for you. If you're looking to change your relationship to money and think about it differently, she's got some great ideas.
review 2: Umm... so apparently I started reading this book in January of this year, probably as some kind of New Year's resolution. The fact that it is now September should tell you a lot about how I felt about this book.I'll be honest - reading financial self-help books isn't really my thing
... more, but getting my finances in order is something that would probably behoove me to find out more about. This book isn't exactly what I was looking for. It's pretty touchy-feely for being a book about finances. The author has a lot of little exercises that you can (should?) do to get the most out of the book. I didn't really do them. I just didn't see how doing a free-write about my earliest memories and experiences with money was going to help me get out of debt.So maybe it's not fair for me to say that I didn't find this book to be that helpful, since I really didn't use it the way the author intended. But I guess I like my financial help to come from a more logical, straightforward mindset rather than such a new-age, touchy-feely one.Other reviewers have mentioned that it's kind of hard to relate to this author, since she comes from a pretty well-to-do background and seems to be a little out of touch with the reality of feeling like you don't have any money. And I would say that's pretty true. I mean, even though she did have a lot of debt, I never got the impression that she had ever really struggled with figuring out how she was going to pay her rent each month. Oh yeah, because she lived in a Manhattan apartment bought and paid for by her mother. An then she starts talking about having leverage income instead of linear income, and how leverage income is what will really help you to make money so that you can live the life you want. That's a pretty good goal, but not very likely to happen for most people, especially people who are most likely to be reading this book and trying to "untangle their financial woes". This does come at the end of the book, so maybe that's just supposed to be the next step in your financial strategy after you have learned to love money and yourself. All in all, I didn't find this book to be super helpful in helping me come up with a better financial strategy for my life. Probably because I didn't use my "Money Love Journal" the way I was supposed to. I do plan to check out a couple of her sources though. less
