The Empress of Rome
review 1: I really wanted to like this book. But for some reason, it just didn't live up to Mistress of Rome.I did not like any of the characters other than Titus, Trajan, and Faustina. Sabina was a bit too unrealistic and annoying for me...it seemed as if she always hid her emotions and did things just to cause a scandal. And Vix was so heedless and impulsive it was also annoying. At the same time, I didn't particularly hate any of the antagonists. Hadrian did not really do anything, to be honest, and Plotina's only evil deed was impersonating the dying Emperor Trajan. The plot was good...interesting for a bit, but I lost interest towards the end of the book. However, I did enjoy the lively writing style and the historical elements. But I preferred Mistress of Rome. I had a stronge... morer connection with Thea and Arius and their relationship, but I didn't really care whether Vix and Sabina ended up together. Spoiler, they didn't.
review 2: I am sooo disappointed with the ending of the book and with Vix that I am not sure where to place him anymore. He was ranking rather high and now just plummeted to the unknown. All along could see his strong character and now I can see lack of it! He just seems to be not knowing what is he doing. Is he a man of principle and loyalty and true devotion to one that he loves? Don't think so. I am so curious how this going to be solved by Kate Quinn. Will Vix redeem himself? cause I think I have given up on him.:( less
