review 1: This is a story of a tornado ripping through Marah, Illinois in March, 1925 and the resulting feelings of survivor's guilt and deep and frenzied bereavement that forever change a family and a town. As it becomes apparent that Paul Graves, his entire family and his business have survived the storm without loss, the people of the town gradually turn on his family and take out their emotions of hurt and loss on the entire family in a most thorough and stunning way.
review 2: This was an engaging and thought-provoking read. Southwood has a unique writing style which, at first, put me off a bit. Once I had read a few pages, however, that style completely drew me into the Graves family and their tale. Falling to Earth is a story of profound loss and how that loss ... moreshapes everyone in this small community - each family, each individual, each institution - none go unscathed. Not a "feel good" read, but one that I enjoyed and would recommend. less
