review 1: The word I think best describes this book is 'meh'! I didn't dislike the book nor did I find it thoroughly enjoyable. I like a historical crime drama & this fit the bill. I was a bit thrown at times by the changing narrative but the main character's mental state excused that for me. It didn't take long for me to read but they could well have been because I didn't feel attached to the book, lost in it-which is what I like to feel when reading a book.
review 2: Okay it was the cover that really got me. And then when I read the description, I thought it sounded just the kind of read I love. But then as I started the book, there were some turn offs the uncle living in a very bad neighborhood in London, but in a state of crumbling opulence seemed unrealistic. His
... more control over his niece and her strange memories and behavior seemed over the top. And then when she started to wander around the streets at night unescorted searching for Jack the Ripper, it really started to irk me. Not only was this historically incorrect, it was unfreaking believable to say the least. Several time I wanted to send this book sailing across the room, but perversely I stuck it out to the end, just to see how bad it could get. And let's just say that the ending didn't' disappoint. less
