review 1: I was expecting to get something more clinical when I picked this out. But after having read it, I discovered that it was just the right amount of information to get myself introduced, in a very subtle manner, to the "world of Autism" as so many people call it. By the time I was done I was very inspired by the story of the mother in the book, from Iceland, by Kate Winslet's compassion, and by the celebrities who took the short time it took to take a picture with the hat. When you're learning about Autism, because your child is Autistic, then this book is a very non-threatening, gentle book to read to give you a little bit of perspective of what Autism is and how far people have come in terms of learning how to work with Autistic children.
review 2: "Imagine w
... moreaking up in your bed, just as you are now, with all your mental capacity and intelligence. In your mind, you know that everything is the way it is supposed to be. The bedside table is where it has always been, with the book you're reading and your iPhone. The closet hasn't moved. The window is half open, and the sun shines through the trees into your bedroom. Everything is as it is supposed to be, except one thing. Your senses are all mixed up. You cannot see and hear at the same time. You only get a fragmented view of your environment. You have little sense of where your body is. You cannot speak. You have no voice." - Margret EricsdottirI'm not really sure where to start. I could relate to so many things that were shared in the first 50 pages of this book. And my reactions to the celebrity photos ranged from "perfect" to "what the heck?". But mostly I'm in love with The Golden Hat Foundation. As a mom of a son who is nonverbal autistic, the idea of creating campuses where adults with autism could go and live with the support they need sounds fantastic. I borrowed this book from the library, but it's one that I'm eager to have in my home! less
