review 1: Adventure and passion on the high seas! Rated at 4.5! Taken from my review at RomanceJunkies.com:Eagle, Sea Hawk, Raven, Sparrow & Peregrine are all agents to the king. Their job is to find missing persons, but it is a dangerous and thankless duty. So they have all quit, but no matter how far they go, they cannot outrun the memories. Twenty-two months earlier, Jinan Seton, the captain of the Cavalier and known as the Sea Hawk by those in the Falcon Club, had set out from Devonshire to find Viola Carlyle. He had spent countless nights searching for the girl who had gone missing fifteen years ago. Everyone in her family, except for her sister, believes she is dead. At the age of ten, she had been captured by an American smuggler. His crew believed she was just another quarry... more whom he had been assigned to find through his work for the government, as one of the Falcon Club. But he has left the Falcon Club behind for this private mission. Returning her to England would repay his debt to a man who had once saved his life. Viola Carlyle is also known as Violet La Vile by other seafarers. She was taken from her home when she was just a young girl of ten by her father and spent several months each year on his ship. She has always loved the sea and looked forward to these times, hating the months that she had to spend on land. Now she is a notoriously famous Massachusetts female privateer and her men are very loyal to her. After her father’s death, she had taken over as captain and nearly two years ago, the state of Massachusetts had hired her to protect their coasts.Jinan had been devastated to see his ship, the Cavalier, sunk to the bottom of the ocean and he and his men tied up on the enemy ship. To make matters worse, they had been beaten by Violet La Vile. Although he had been searching for her for almost two years, this was his first glimpse of her. But instead of finding her, she has found him. Having an aristocratic air about him, he is dubbed Pharoah by many. For the past ten years, Viola has believed herself in love with Aidan Castle, who has left the sea and purchased land to farm. After capturing Jinan and his crew, she turned them in at a nearby port to the port authorities, knowing they would be released the next morning. Her plans are to deliver her present shipment and go to Aidan, hoping he will accept her offer of a life with him whereby she will spend six months each year at sea and the rest on land with him, even though she has not heard a word from him in some time. But before she leaves on her trip, Jinan approaches her and offers his and three of his men’s services for the upcoming voyages. Being shorthanded, she agrees to take them on. While at sea, he tells her that he has been looking for her and he intends to take her home to her sister. At first, she refuses to return to England. However, before they reach their destination, she and Jinan make a bet of their own. She has fourteen days to make him fall in love with her. If she fails, she will go to England with him to see her sister again for the first time in many years. If she wins, she gets the new ship he has recently ordered. Even as she speaks the words laying out the bet, she cannot believe the words are coming from her. But she cannot deny her attraction to the gorgeous man. Can she make him fall in love with her and if not, will she be able to step back into the life she was taken from so many years ago? A delicious read, HOW TO BE A PROPER LADY, the second book in award-winning author Katharine Ashe’s FALCON CLUB series, is a passionate, witty historical romance. Jinan and Viola are intelligent and have spirited personalities, but they also have vulnerabilities, and it is these vulnerabilities which unites them and also brings them to life on the written page. Steamy passion, high seas adventure, intriguing characters, clever repartee and romance abound in this enticing new novel. From the prologue right through the epilogue, Ms. Ashe has penned a winner! This story can be read as a standalone, but I suggest also reading the first book in this delightful series, WHEN A SCOT LOVES A LADY for additional enjoyment. I also look forward to reading the next book in this adventure-packed series, HOW A LADY WEDS A ROGUE, due out near the end of September. Do not miss HOW TO BE A PROPER LADY. I highly recommend it! review 2: Seems I'm having a soft spot lately for the pirates. Jsut finished reading jennifer ashley's regency pirates series #1 & 2 which I liked alot. I like this one even better, and may have to go back and read the first in the series to get a little more background on what the falcon club really is. It seems a little sketchy in this one, if you have not read the first you are sort of at a loss, although you can get a jist of the gereal idea.Great H/H. Two very strong figures with ghosts in the their pasts. And can I just say I love the names the author has given her characters, especially Jinan. Exotic, just like the character, yet not so out there that it distracts from the story. less
