review 1: Weird. Just really weird. Not at all what I was expecting. A quiet sort of story, no blood pumping adventure in the traditional sense despite circumstances that could have warranted it. I guess I just never connected with Alcestis' obsession with finding her sister, which takes up a significant portion of the plot. I didn't understand her at all and subsequently the book was mostly I unsatisfying and didn't do much for me.
review 2: This book started off strong, with an author who seemed like she had a good handle on Classical Greek mythology and culture... but then it went downhill after Alcestis made it to the underworld. I feel like Alcestis' character almost became a different person. I liked the living Alcestis better. And the introduction of awkward lesbia
... moren smut did not add anything to the story except... well... awkwardness. At least for me. And the characterizations of both Heracles and Hades left me wondering if the author only read half-way through her mythology notes. Overall, I wanted to enjoy this book... but ended up having to push myself to finish it. The two star rating is pretty much an average of the higher quality of the first half of the book and the awfulness of the second half. less

It started off great, but it turned into something like a soap opera half way through...

A nice retelling of the myth. I'm a sucker for Greek mythology. Three and a half stars

Profound. Beutner shows what it might really be like to be loved by a god.
