review 1: The story is well put together and jumps between past and present with no confusion, plus some great cliffhangers towards the end. Wish more authors could do this so skilfully. It does start slowly, but the tension builds and you get the uneasy feeing that bad things could happen. At the end the story moves fast, and if some things stretch belief, well it is fiction after all. The characters are interesting, even though you don't necessarily like them all, like real people. The flashbacks to a rural prewar Dorset are quite atmospheric.
review 2: I've wanted to read this book for a while...something about the cover and title intrigued me. It was good and I liked it, but I just didn't believe a lot of the characters actions. For example, the Aubrey's take Mitzy
... more with them to Morocco. Really? A friend's family takes you all the way to Morocco??? When I was 16 I would go to dinner with my friend and her family but definitely not Morocco! I know I'm oversimplifying because there was more going on here but that is just one example of how absurd I found some of the character's actions in this book. less
