review 1: This is a laborious read at 469 pages but overall worth it. I don't usually prefer books that parallel stories from the present to a historical time, in this case to 1937. But thankfully, in this book it was absolutely pivotal to weave the stories together as it explains everything you need to fill in the blanks. I was most intrigued by the 1937 story of Dimity aka Mitzy, a teenager with an inappropriate obsession with French artist Charles Aubrey, who spends summers with his mistress Celeste and their two daughters on the Dorset coast of England where Mitzy lives. The present day story of Zach, who attempts to research for a book by staying in that same coastal town where Dimity grew up, is less intriguing. However, the writing is lovely and flows easily throughout the b... moreook and is a quite suspenseful story. I wish it had ended sooner because it wasn't necessary to belabor the plot revelations for that long.
review 2: A haunting quality to this book about what is real and what is perceived. I found the character of Dimity very layered, but at the same time equally minimal in her quest for the love of Charles. She was at once a tragic heroine and a sadistic innocent. Zach and Hannah portray the epitome of how love can extend beyond boundaries we place in ourselves. The real tragedy is that of Celeste and her girls. In circumstances beyond their control, they unwittingly play out a jealous love triangle that has tragic consequences. I was at first sorry for Dimity, but then couldn't stand her. There is a lot of love, twisted and projected, as well as true and honest between all the characters. A great mystery that unfolds slowly and systematically. The writing easily lets the reader fall back in time to watch the unfolding drama. less

Loved every second of this book. Very unpredictable, very well written, reminds me of Kate Morton.
