review 1: An engaging read. I enjoyed the setting; the author was very descriptive. The characters were very well developed, most of them were not very likable though. Good historical mystery that mostly kept my interest. I just found it to be a pretty depressing read and it left me with a heaviness. Well written story though. My review probably has more to do with my reading preferences though and not really a fault of the authors writing.

An unsuccessful gallery owner stays in a Dorset village, trying to unearth what really happened in a famous artist's family towards the end of the 1930s. Secrets gradually emerge, both about the artist and about present inhabitants of... more the area. The plotting is superb, as is the writing. I thoroughly recommend this book. less
