review 1: This is a fabulous book. Compelling, beautifully crafted characters, a historical context that is well researched but doesn't drown you in detail and a cleverly woven plot. I got totally lost in the story once I got into it (I did find it a little slow to start, hence the four rather than five stars). The story was very dark, much more so than The Legacy and The Unseen, and there was little to be cheered by throughout most of the book. Ultimately however, the strength of character of Starling, Rachel and Jonathan was uplifting and had me rooting for them. A brilliant book- read it please!
review 2: Enjoyed this tale of love, family secrets and betrayal. Set in the early 19th century in the area around Bath (very familiar to me, which was a bonus!), the book was
... more particularly good at showing the plight of women in this era - no rights, no property once married, having to suffer abuse (even at the hands of other relatives) - a really disturbing scenario. There were several relationship threads throughout the story, although perhaps too many to make the plot totally believable. Overall though I enjoyed the book, but others in our book group disagreed! - 8/10. less
