review 1: I adored this book. This is further proof that if you don't like an author the first time you read them, try try again. There is something about Kathi Appelt's storytelling that I just love. Her humor is subtle and soft and perfect, the way she jumps from character to character slowly revealing more of them along with more of the story, her mix of short and long chapters...her voice is very unique and it just couldn't be more perfect. Added bonus - I listened to this on audio, and Lyle Lovett does the narration. It is amazing!I would recommend this to fans of Carl Hiassen and Erin Hunter. And adult fans of Sarah Addison Allen.~Jaime
review 2: I chose “True Blue Scouts of Sugar Man Swamp” because of its great reviews and a super cute cover. I am always on th
... moree lookout to find good books for the elementary kids I read to every month. As it turns out, I think this is a fun, comical adventure for any kid 3rd-5th grades! 3 1/2 stars from me.The story, set in the Bayou swamps, mixes a legend with a definite ecological twist. All the fascinating and scary animals we think of living in the Bayou play parts that add intrigue to the story. The adorable raccoons pictured on the cover live in a long lost and neglected 1949 DeSoto on the edge of the swamp. Bingo and J’miah love when lightning hits nearby because it stirs the “Voice of Intelligence” which comes from their home - aka Information Headquarters. That was aTwo money-hungry characters are determined to destroy the whole Bayou area to build “Gator World Wrestling Area and Theme Park”. Locals, as well as our heroic detectives want to save their beloved Bayou from devastation. Bingo and J’miah’s quest to find, and awaken the legendary Sugar Man and his trusty rattlesnake, Gertrude, to help is prime. It all involves a café, a whole lotta fried Sugar Pies, a bunch of funny characters, animals, and believe it or not – flying pigs! Fun story! Personally, I would love to have seen a few illustrations every once in awhile. The closest I’ve ever been to the Bayou is the Pirate’s Ride at Disneyland! I will definitely recommend “True Blue…” to the kids I share books with. less
