review 1: This was a really cute WAW possibility -- even better than the author's The Underneath! This is the story of two raccoons who are on scout duty for the Sugar Man who is a supposed relative of Big Foot and lives in the Texas swamp. So when the raccoons hear the thunder of a mean group of wild pigs coming to the swamp they have to wake up the Sugar Man so he can save it. Chap is a boy who also lives in the swamp and helps his mom run a cafe that serves sugar pies. His grandfather has just passed away and Chap is now the man of the house trying to save the swamp from being turned into a gator wrestling arena. The author uses a funny voice and talks to the reader like a friend. It's a great book and a definite yes vote for me.
review 2: Enjoyable story with a
... more boy who comes to love the bayou as much as his Grandfather did. Now he and his mother have to come up with "a boatload" of money or else they're going to lose their restaurant to the big money grubbing Mr. Beaucoup. Meanwhile, a pair of raccoons must gather some sugarcane to help wake the Sugar Man who has been sleeping for 60 years. Only he will know how to deal with the rumble rumble rumble rumble which is putting fear into the hearts and minds of many who live in the bayou. What is making that noise and when will it end? It all makes for a very interesting, hard to put down read which has received rave reviews and several award nominations. less
