Grant Brothers
review 1: Book #2 of the Grant Brothers series & I'm still a little concerned whether I'll finish the series or not. Those who know me know that once I start something, I have to finish, but right now, it's a mediocre "if" when it comes to finishing. Okay, here's the problem with Ms. Barton's writing: she needs an editor badly! In this book she even thanked someone for editing it for her. Uh, was this person five? Yeesh. Still tons of grammar errors, i.e. "their" instead of "they're," ack! Also, for some ungodly reason, she hardly used contractions in this book. Why? [She looked at him and wanted to hit him, but knew that she could not.] What's wrong with "couldn't"? This book is riddled with sentences like this. ["You ready to order?" Her voice was clipped, but at this point, she d... moreid not care.] Why not "didn't"?? I just find it annoying & stiff.Anyway, again, the story line was decent. Obviously, it was good enough to keep my attention (thank goodness these books are short), but there were still many inconsistencies and discrepancies that just can't be overlooked by the reader--Ronnie was beaten as a child by her incestuous, pedophile of a father. Okay, the main characters are somewhat believable, but when the father and sister, (who he raped repeatedly, along with her twin sister, when she was three [THREE???]), show up at the end, these characters were just almost comically flimsy and inconceivable. Oh, and don't forget the brother who shows up out of nowhere only to be shot dead by Ronnie. Um. Really? I mean, I understand that new information needs to be introduced, but it needs to be done in a timely and realistic manner. After reading two of her books so far, I feel a little seasick from moving back and forth with all the new things being thrown in: Ronnie always wanted a puppy? Guess I missed that part. There was more violence in this book as in the first and also an unrealistic misunderstanding that separated the main characters. I just feel like this book was an example of "same song, second verse" and I'm afraid to move on to book three for fear that it'll be verse three and I'll have to flounce. We shall see ;)
review 2: I love these Grant brothers. Devin is such an amazing tale that will pull at your heart, you feel for the characters. Kathi Barton is the most talented new author I have ever read, her ability to put the reader in the story and keep you there to the very end is amazing. Make sure you don't have any plans when reading this book, because you won't want to put it down. I don't want to give away any spoilers, but I will say get comfy, have a box of tissue ready and make sure you have easy access to a cold shower...cause it is going to get HOT! less
