review 1: I received this book as part of GoodReads' wonderful first readers program.I am an avid reader of SciFi, Fantasy, historical fiction and other 'EPIC' novels. This is usually my favored reading and this style tends to be driven on detail and multiple strings of story lines and characters. I have been known to pick up a romance novel from time to time which still holds that 'epic' feel even though they tend to be much shorter. That being said, I knew in the first few pages that this was nothing of that sort. At first I was thrown off by the sheer simplicity and thought I wouldn't enjoy the book very much. I judged the book on its first 10 pages or so and my usual flavor of Literature enjoyment.WOW, was I wrong.By page 26, the beginning of Chapter three, I was very much inter... moreested and enjoying the novel. The writing style is so simple and to the point that every page was filled with such immense and relatable events and feelings. I felt as though I was talking with a family member and going through some rough events of life with them. It seemed at just the right time the narration moved from the main character to a snipit insight of another, though this was rare.I found out what I enjoyed most, the sheer honesty and truth in the pages.Against all odds, I loved this book. I would NOT have picked it up on my own nor looked up the reviews. I was not suppose to like it, after reading the first pages. I had no opinion when I first opened the book so started with a blank slate. I entered to receive a copy simply on whim and that I saw a friend had read it however I do not believe I even fully read the synopsis.I was very surprised, entertained, and even shed some tears. I finished the book in just a couple days so it was a very fast read.I highly recommend this book to those interested in short, or inspirational, or 'real talk' type books. But I also recommend it to everyone else, looking for something new and fresh to their reading list.
review 2: Before the Dawn is one of those books I loved from the cover and knew at page 1 I was going to really get into. I read it in a day and couldn’t wait to dive right into the second book in the new Home to Heather Creek series. While this is a sad story of three young children losing their mother, it’s also a beautiful and touching story of hope and new beginnings. As a mom, one of my worst nightmare’s is dying young and leaving my children. Not because I fear death but because I know how it would devastate them. This is the situation that Charlotte finds herself in the middle of.Charlotte’s daughter left home at 18 and never looked back. Not only is Charlotte dealing with the loss of her daughter for a second time, she’s trying to raise the three grandchildren she barely knows and keep up with her life on the farm. Everyone involved struggles with letting go of the life they once knew and adjusting to what they now have.Change is hard, especially one this tragic and drastic. The team of Kathleen Bauer beautifully portrays this newly formed family and how letting go of the past and moving forward together can give meaning back to broken lives in Before the Dawn. less
