review 1: This book is the first novel from this author. Although, the plot gets a bit busy and messy at the end. I enjoyed the characters and the plot. Lavinia is young child from Ireland who becomes an indentured servant to Captain and Miss Martha on a plantation in Virginia. She is embraced by the black slaves and they become her surrogate family. We read how Lavinia grows up and marries Marshall, the son on the plantation. There is a fair amount of violence in the story. There is also two points of view, :Lavinia and Belle, a slave who works in the kitchen house. There was a bit of foreshadowing, you could guess some of the plot points that were going to happen. Over all, a quick and enjoyable read.
review 2: A historical fiction story set in Viriginia and tol
... mored through the eyes of two very different characters- Belle (the daughter of the master and a slave) and Lavinia (a child brought home as an indentured servant.) The characters are so warm, funny and relatable and although Belle and Lavinia's paths are so different throughout the novel, the tragic events lead to a satisfying conclusion. Loved it. less
