review 1: 3.5 stars. Really enjoyed this fascinating, thoughtful novel about a professional modern dancer who suffers an inexplicable fall from 14 stories and struggles with recovery and making a life after dance. Wish I could remember where I heard of this, I know (knew) nothing of dance and enjoyed learning throughout. Exploration of unconventional friendships, seeking independence, following a passion and especially the relationship between the protagonist Penny and her mother were very well done. I also thought the author did a nice job with the body type and eating disorder discussions without being heavy handed. Oh and the fall - loved how the author handled and didn't reveal the circumstances of Penny's fall until the end and still left much to interpretation. Well don... moree. The writing is a bit flowery at times for my taste and some of the imagery a little over done but overall I thought it was very well written and I enjoyed it much more than I expected. Unconventional novel for me I'm glad to have found.
review 2: Did you ever read a novel that was beautiful and well written, yet you didn't like it? I didn't think it was possible, but that sums up my feelings for this novel perfectly. I can appreciate the art, yet I just could not get into this book. Maybe it was its melodramatic flair or the constant dance analogies that threw me off. I felt like the aerobics instructors at the end who just "didn't get it." I felt I could understand how she felt losing her livelihood and I appreciate the notion that young girls are obsessed with body image, but I felt like it was too exclusive to dance for me to relate to. However, I can't deny the beauty of this novel and wish Ms. Craft continued success with her writing career. less

good idea for a story but I found it a little strained. Okay.
