review 1: The world thought that Mr. Ferris had a bizarre idea for the 1893 World Fair, but seeing as there was not a better idea, he was given the ok to design and build this "far fetched idea" of what we now know as the Ferris Wheel. The United States was desperate to show the world something even better than the Eiffel Tower, built to astonish crowds at the previous World Fair. With his own money, as he was not granted any for this crazy idea, and with only six months to accomplish the project, engineer George Ferris accomplished the impossible and showcased his invention at the Chicago World Fair. I did not know the background of the Ferris wheel, and was fascinated with this story. It is told so that even those readers who do not have an engineering brain (like me!) can underst... moreand the principles behind this construction. Both text and illustrations (digital mixed media with ink and watercolor) enhance the reader's understanding of this well loved invention.
review 2: This narrative non-fiction title about the birth of the first Ferris Wheel is fascinating. The retro illustrations done in ink and watercolor set the tone for Mr. Ferris and his passion for inventing a Ferris wheel in honor of the engineering profession. Kathryn Gibbs Davis' text describes the incredible challenges he met, lack of money, freezing weather, quick sand, and skeptical judges at the Chicago World's Fair. Ferris wheels are a topic kids already love, the clear rich story of completing the Ferris Wheel in time for the fair in the "White City" will have kids routing for Mr. Ferris. The facts in smaller font on the right side of many of the double spreads will satisfy tose who have fact finding curiosity. For someone who is a big fan of Erik Larson's Devil in the White City, this is a superb title to add to great literature about the Chicago World's Fair. less
