review 1: Moving Pictures was one of the first indie comic works I ever read. It's also become one of my favorites. It doesn't hurt that I greatly enjoy the two creators and much of their mainstream work. It also doesn't hurt that the story is set during one of my favorite time periods.Moving Pictures tells the story of a woman art curator, who begins trying to save the great works of art during the Nazi occupation of France. Along the way she meets her counterpart from the German side of the equation, and the two enter into a relationship even while trying to outplay one another. It's a game of cat and mouse that highlights the choices we sometimes make in the face of extreme circumstances.I enjoyed just about everything about this book. It's well paced, well written, and bea... moreutifully illustrated. Highly recommended.
review 2: Extremely well drawn and well told, but somehow it left me cold. There is an understated quality to it that should have been full of allure and mystery, yet on me it seemed obtuse and uninviting. When doing historical fiction in comic form you do not have the luxuries of film, where movement, sounds, and detail can create a very convincing illusion of historicity. You can however, as dull as can be when used wrong, use exposition to great effect. I feel, perhaps, that if this book didn't go out of it's way to remain "cinematic", and let the context of the story share a little spotlight with the character-drama, it would be easier to relate to the drama as well. Anyhow, an interesting read both as WW2 story, a comic for art-historians, and as just a decent story. Do read. less

This book was a tad disappointing. It wasn't quite the story I thought it would be.
