review 1: This is a poignant story full of outsiders - a young refugee from Vietnam, his suffering mother and his little sister (deformed from exposure to Agent Orange), all new to Toronto, all dealing with dilemmas of newcomers everywhere - but with a painful difference. A child who's kept hidden because of her deformity seems to embody "all the broken things" of the title. Yet her brother, good with his fists, gets an offer to join the bear-wrestling carny circuit of the 1970s and his relationship with a big bruin is as tender as any classic boy-and-his-dog story and a good deal more surreal. As in all good "animal" fiction, the critter humanizes everything. The writing's crisp and the pages turn. Whether or not you love bears, it's a fine read.
review 2: Wow, I don't
... morethink I've read anything like this. Before finally reading this book (I've been holding onto it since her fantastic book launch!), I was reading a lot of YA, so it took me a bit to settle into the deep, dark trenches. Actually, I don't think I was ever settled, I was very unsettled through this story (this is a compliment). I actually worried for the characters, and I am still wondering what happened to them. I worried for their well-being. This is very sad, but a very meaningful read. Kathryn's writing is beautiful. The way she humanizes bears, the way she really understand's Bo's feelings, the way she holds up Orange... less
