Wolves of the Beyond
review 1: Faolan's journey continues in the second installment of the series. Faolan now has the lowest ranking among his pack. He has the chance to go to the "gnaddergaw", games for low ranked wolves. The winners will get to go to the sacred Watch, where they are treated with respect. Faolan has a big chance of winning, until a wolf pup gets killed and everyone seems to blame him. While not as bland as the first book, still a very boring book. The character doesn't get much development here either, and, altough there are finally many side characters introduced, most of them are bores either. The only really interesting character comes in the form of Heep: a yellow wolf who is born with crooked hips, an oversized tooth and no tail. The latter makes him partially mute, since tails are... more very important for wolf communication. He's very ill tempered and has a grudge against Faolan (so yeah he's the antagonist), but he's the only interesting guy around, really. In this book there is also the introduction of Faolan's best friend and later love interest Edme, who is as boring as Faolan himself. There actually is some decent amount of dialogue in this book, so it isn't as boring as the first one, but still nothing good.
review 2: In this sequel to the first one, Lone Wolf, the protagonist, Faolan returns to his clan as a gnaw wolf, a wolf who gnaws on bones to create a design, and also the lowest member of society in the clans. Faolan has become a very good gnaw wolf, and probably the best gnaw wolf of his generation, but some grow suspicious of Faolan and his competitor, Heep becomes wary of Faolan, because he sees him as his biggest obstacle in getting into the watch of the sacred volcanoes, one of the most respected organizations in the world. I liked this story, but sometimes I think that Faolan being the best gnaw wolf is a bit silly, it would make the story better if he was average and got better over time, but I liked the characters, especially Heep, he felt like a real jerk in a real world! That's the sign of good characters. Otherwise, this book was pretty great, especially for a sequel. less
