review 1: BEWARE of spoilers. One man's bookflap summary is another man's spoiler. This is the second I've read of Reichs' now-lengthy series on forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan. My public library didn't have all the installments on hand; I wanted one set in Canada rather than the Carolinas.Interesting plot foundation: value of Canada's in-ground diamond assets. Also got an interesting look at the indigenous population living near Edmonton, as well as rural Western Canadians in general.I did feel gypped that Brennan's affair w. 501 Levis-wearing detective Ryan was already over (though the book has hints it may resume) -- In the first book, the romance is foreshadowed but doesn't materialize yet.Moreso, I was dissatisfied that Reichs by now feels so comfortable in her series... more that she's gotten a bit "pat" on the boilerplate that she's obliged to repeat in every book: value of forensics, how deceased crime victims uncergo further indignity and dehumanization during the legal process, how Brennan feels justified -- and yet complicit -- in her part in a post-mortem crime investigation.
review 2: (some mild spoilers) I needed an audiobook to listen to in the car, and thankfully found a Temperance Brennan book that I hadn't already listened to at the library. I'm a big fan of these books (and the Bones TV show) in general, but I didn't particularly enjoy most of this one, for several reasons: the opening deaths were very disturbing; the scientific exposition felt like a drag; Tempe and Ryan are on the outs for most of the book, which means little fun banter; Tempe repeatedly defies authority and good sense to strike out on her own, to the detriment of her safety and the safety of those around her. While I appreciate her feisty-ness at times, I sided with Ryan and Ollie in rolling my eyes in frustration. Overall a disappointed "meh" from me. less
