review 1: This is one of the better books I've read on couponing. After reading most couponing books, I wonder how "coupon queens" can save so much. This author explains the strategies of how to become an "extreme shopper" and she claims to only spend about $4-$5 a week on groceries. Basically she only buys the best deals each week, or the ones where she can get items for free, along with things she absolutely needs. When she finds the great deals, she buys things in multiples, then stockpiles the extras so she doesn't run out of stuff and can then just focus on the deals. She states that it takes time to build up a stockpile and gives advice on how to work up to this level. Another trick is getting lots of coupons. Most of us just use the coupons that come in our Sunday newsp... moreaper, but the author gets others to save extra coupon circulars and also sometimes "buys" coupons on eBay. Another strategy is using any money she earns as overage from couponing (e.g., when something costs $1.00 but you have a coupon for $1.50 you "earn" 50 cents) then applying this extra money to cover the cost of things like meat and produce for which coupons are not usually available. Some other suggestions are selling clothing and other things on ebay and then using that money to buy new clothes (how she claims to "shop for free" when buying these things). The author gives insights into the many rewards and frequent shopper programs offered by different stores and also tips for online shopping. She has a website with a searchable coupon database (that you can search by product name to find out when and where coupons appeared). Lots of good suggestions.
review 2: I'm on page 146 of 256 of How to Shop for Free: This is by far, the best of the couponing books I've read this month. Honestly, it's probably the best How To book I've ever read. Why?The author is informative (which is key for a noob like me) and hilarious. She's like the sassy snarky friend you never pass up an opportunity to hang out with. I love her tips and have filled 3 pages in a notebook with great tips she's given. I don't say this lightly: This book is AMAZING.Even if you have no desire to cut coupons and want to get stuff for free, I strongly suggest you get this book. It's practical, doable and a fun read. less
