First Comes Love
review 1: A story of Gray's complete turnaround in his solitary, stagnant life after randomly encountering the highly creative, philosophical Dylan on the sidewalk of his Mesa Community College (while working on her gecko photograph) and then becoming her highly reluctant tour guide. Dylan has arrived from Wisconsin to the dry heat Arizona summer to briefly live with her wealthy aunt. She is a willing nomad that likes to people watch, collect new experiences, has weekly goals and strives to perform at least one random thing per day. She does not dress to impress like the general Phoenix population and does not care what others think of her. This makes her a refreshingly 'real' person.Gray is still recovering from the tragic loss of his twin sister, Amanda- and grows a great deal fro... morem his friendship with this strange girl that speaks a lot of hogwash and creates a lot of fun through craziness. This involves Dylan's orange station wagon named Pickle, the ever-present Arizona saguaro, frequent hiking trips and road trips as well as the sad, overweight Boba dog from the Humane Society. In turn, this leads to their gradual, mutual falling in love. However poor timing with Gray's new future at the University of New Mexico in their baseball team and Dylan's pursuit for new experiences in different places- separates them. Kacvinsky has written an enchanting tale with an exceptionally intriguing character in Dylan- who reminds me of a more mature 'Stargirl' and with a never-ending spiel of quirky conversation. Enjoyed the chapters framed in a series of 'Firsts' as the relationship develops and being able to hear the perspectives of both the two key characters as each milestone is reached. Some interesting ideas presented about taking life seriously but not taking yourself too seriously as well as posing other thoughtful and meaningful questions. In the end, a lovely ending with a good message in making the most of life by finding what it is that makes it worth living.
review 2: I really loved this one! I loved the characters and how well they were developed with personalities and backstories (it's almost painful how often the importance of a good backstory is forgotten in books.) I loved the passion between the two. They seemed so real and I loved Gray and Dylan so much. I loved her writing style. Even for Gray, the male perspective, it sounded realistic, like it actually came from a guy. I know how difficult it is to write as a guy. :PThe only real issue I had was I wish she'd used more dialogue tags and conversations instead of "he said this. She said this. He mentioned this." It was more telling, not showing, get what I mean? Other than that little nitpick, it was a fantastic read, and I look forward to reading more by this author. less
