review 1: Written from the point of view of Uruvi, the second wife of Karna, this book retells Mahabharata. It is a sincere attempt to portray an unrecognised character. However one cannot but compare this retelling to 'the palace of illusions', which Ms. Chitra B Devakaruni has written from the point of view of Draupadi, and in the face of that it falls flat. This book misses the wow factor. The writing is ordinary and the editing poor. This book fails to invoke emotions and give the reader a high. In places it seems that the writer is trying too hard to bring out Uruvi's personality. After reading this book, I do not understand the character of Karna better, or his struggles. The only USP of this book is that it is from the point of view of Uruvi. This USP has an immense potentia... morel which is sadly unfulfilled. It is a but an ordinary read, to be read with ordinary expectations.
review 2: This book gave me mixed feelings. If I read through this book patiently, it was only because of my curiosity. I wanted to know the Mahabharath story and the author's take on it. And I got what I wanted. But not the way I wanted. It was a bit unnerving to read through repetitive arguments. The reasoning of each character was repeated too many times to my liking. It was tough to read Uruvi explaining to Karna that he's wrong to side with Duryodhana, and again to read her saying the same to Vrushali. And again, Krishna says it too.It was the same thing over and over, and though it was bearable for most part of the story, I got a little restless towards the end. The story grew interesting and I wanted to get to the climax soon. But again, these repeated conversations tested my patience. I was reading through pages of what I thought were useless chunks of text.Other than that, I liked this book. The story is a win, no doubt. Really liked the way the author has taken the flow of the story.Wasn't much impressed by the narrative style, but that's just me. Considering it's her first novel, Kavitha Kane has done a good job of this book. less
