review 1: Kay Brat found the magic in how to tell a heartbreaking story with a fairy tale ending without being contrived. The story read well and was complex enough to engage the reader. It also provided an education of the human trafficking issue in China without being academic. The book told a heartbreaking tale without the usual righteousness of books that deal with similar subject matter. Well done and thank you.
review 2: It's possible this book was written more for teens. If so, the lightness of it makes more sense. However, I struggle with the concept that teens couldn't handle something darker. And I think the topic requires it. I liked the characters and would have appreciated understanding them better. The book only touches on the cultural differences betw
... moreeen China and my own Western culture. I think if it could have delved into that deeper, I may have understood the characters better. It was hard for me to buy that the girls were that naive at age 13 to get into their predicament in the first place, for example. In a country that, apparently, really does deal with such situations, it seems that children would be taught more self-preservation skills. At least the name of their village! Odd not to know that at that age.I read the book in one day. A blustery, stormy day where laying on the couch, wrapped in a blanket, was a great idea. If not for that, I may have read this book in short bursts in-between other more challenging and provocative books on my shelf. In essence, I was intrigued enough to read to the end to see how it resolved but there was no doubt that the book was going to end with a happy ending. And I think that was one of the failures in the book. Such a happy ending for virtually all the characters just doesn't fit the dark story. And I found the ending disappointingly cliche.I chose the book because my son is currently living and working in China and I'll be going to visit there. Thus, I want to understand the country and culture better in order to give my visit there more meaning. If not for that, I may not have finished the book. I liked it enough to finish it and wouldn't discourage anyone from reading it but I simply didn't like it enough to promote it either. less
