review 1: Another reviewer summarized this book beautifully; a trash collector takes in abandoned females in China. Naturally, he struggles to provide for them but their home is filled with love and contentment. As he ages he finds it harder to provide for them. I found that this novel lacked an urgency to the narrative that make it difficult for me to want to pick up and read; it was more of stream-of-consciousness, which is kind of boring.
review 2: What a sweet book. Benfu's devotion to his orphans in the face of pride of place and the direct opposition to the harshness of dictatorship engendered by Mao's cultural revolution.The characters are charming, the plot is good. Well done Kay.I have already bought the next in the series. I can't wait for the story to conti... morenue.Note: fans of Lisa See and her books will like this just as well. less
