Tales of the Scavenger's Daughters
review 1: The concept was great. The time period and place was an excellent medium to create a story--I think it is a bit rare to read about this time period in China and that was a refreshing change to fiction. Sadly, the writing was just plain juvenile--mediocre to boredom I'd say. Quite a pity. Probably won't read any of the other ones if they are going to be the same melodrama explained in every detail by a 10-year-old sounding author.
review 2: Unusual story of a scavenger in China who survived the Great Leap Forward and Cultural Revolution. He finds recyclable things in the trash to make his living for his wife and himself. Tragedy steals his daughter and I'm hoping to find out what happened to her in one of the sequels in this series. The scavenger also takes i
... moren abandoned babies and children he finds in the trash, wandering alone in meat markets or in a koi pond in the park. The children are all named after flowers and the reader is drawn into the lives of these babies and the adoptive parents. Quite moving and very enlightening about life in China. I read it for our Book Club and will read the rest of the series. less

I really wanted to love this series. The story is decent, the writing is only fair.
