review 1: I wanted to like it. I really did. But MAN is Ryan just heavy. Not in emotion wise either. At least for me.What I mean is that I feel like I needed a chainsaw going through this collection. That's it. Kay Ryan's poems were a huge tree, and all I had was a dull knife to cut it down. You need some serious brain power and time to get through these babies. The poems are very creative and the language is very... it's a mouthful. And I like that. But there are no images that come with the poems. Subjects are all over the place and there is a lack of adjectives to help you get through the chewy words. So if you take on Kay Ryan.. just remember.Bring a chainsaw.
review 2: I'd just decided I felt like reading more poetry when my friend Ryan gave me this book.
... moreThese poems are a little bit maddening to me, in that they seem to describe something I am familiar or intimate with and yet there is something else entirely under the surface too. Something that I seem to know but still can't quite get at. I tried banging my head against them for a little while and then tried reading them just intuitively, after which I enjoyed them much more. less

Startling precise and emotional if you can make it past the poems chalk full of despair.
