review 1: I am growing a little frustrated with the Amulet series and I'm not sure how badly I want to finish them. To help me make that decision I'll make this a bit of a list--the things that Amulet does well and the things it does not do well. Let's start with the good. The splash pages of the landscapes are amazing. I first found Kibuishi from his flight series and the fantasy flying ships and gorgeous scenery remain present in the wide shots. They almost look like they're from a different artist. Furthermore, the back ends of the books are always full of exciting energy that drive the series further, making me actually interested in what will come of Emily and her family, and of the stonekeepers.And for the bad--the characters are bland-looking. Mom in particular looks photosho... morepped into the story, and stretched out. Worse yet, Mom doesn't need to be here at all anymore. She's had basically no impact on the story since the second book. Furthermore, the first halves of the books are tedious. It seems like nothing happens on purpose--that they're there to bulk up the books, create imaginary tension, and kill time for the endings. At ten dollars a pop (at least out here in Korea) I don't want to question the value. So by the end of this one, I thought "I want to know what is next" but I definitely didn't think that in the first hundred pages. Yes, these are for children, but the target audience doesn't change how I feel about my experience with them. For now it's up in the air.
review 2: 3.5/5 stars(Spoilers if you haven't read it!)Some thoughts:- If the man who took Cogsley & Miskit had the device to track his creations, then how come he didn't try and look for them before? - Max is a good actor; or he's just super good at decieving people. I never thought Max could've been the one that's behind all the unusual activities... (I was starting to think he & Emily will team up in the future and such. I guess not.) - How did Cogsley & Miskit & the old man find Leon & Trellis? Their exact location & all? The device? Or did they just saw them? - Why did Ronin have to die (she turned to stone, but it's kinda the same thing, kinda)? I quite liked her. :( - Annnnd the old man. He claims that he knew Silas & that he was on the council with him, but so far, we little about him, I feel like. I guess we shall find out in the next volume. ^.^Lookin' forward to reading Prince of the Elves! less
