review 1: So far I have liked the "Amulet" books, but I don't think they're great. In Vol. 5 "Prince of the Elves," I think that there are too many concepts swimming around. I found it confusing and a tad frustrating. I've begun wondering too what the overall lesson it is that I'm supposed to take away from reading this series. Again, there are so many concepts and details that, in my opinion, haven't been fully fleshed out that I'm not sure what to focus on. For instance, the cursed city in the second book where people slowly turn into animals - will we ever learn more about the curse? Why is it important? Is part of Emily's mission to break the curse? The city and its past were left there and not mentioned again. The same thing happens in book 4. We know something happened to Ciel... moreis - something really bad, but it's never fully explained. Maybe it not Kibuishi's style to reveal too much all at once. Maybe it's part of the suspense. Maybe the lesson is simply found in the good versus evil plot. Maybe I'll read the subsequent books to find out, and maybe I won't.
review 2: 4/5 starsI would definitely say this volume is my favorite in the series so far (even though it was mostly setting up for Escape for Lucien, book 6). Side note: This book was left at a cliffhanger. *sighs* I'll have to wait a month or so for the next book to come out. *sighs again* I know the time I have to wait is much shorter than everyone else who's already finished this volume long before me, but still... August 26th seems so far away... *reaches up toward the sky, knowing full well that she'll just grab onto air* (Spoilers ahead, if you haven't read it) Some thoughts: - Although the background info Mr. Kibuishi provided about Max helped us understand him better, I still thought it was sort of long since it took about 27 pages of the book, almost 30. - After the flashback, why Max was able to retrieve his "old body" was still not clearly explained... - Why did Miskit & Leon have to stay while Emily, Trellis, the old man, Navin and Cogsley (and heck, even Emily & Navin's mother) took off? I was hoping for more involvement from them. (But I guess you can't include everyone at times...) - Following the explosion, the 4 stonekeepers landed on the ground. It'll probably be explained in the next volume, but how are they going to reach Lucien now? Will the crew find them, considering the fact that one of their wings got blown off? (I hope so...) - At the end, what is Chronos (the mountain giant) planning on doing with Max? He just grabbed him and flew away... I can't help but wonder...is he working with the "voice" somehow? - And the cliffhanger I mentioned: Emily & the "voice" playing chess. I was like: What?! less
