review 1: Dad and Pop is a book about a little girl, never named, and her blended family. She has two dads, one biological and one a stepfather. The narrative tells the similarities and differences between the activities that she does with both of her dads. Both men in her life care about her as fathers should, and do different things with her based on their personalities. Author Kelly Bennett has remarried in her lifetime so her two children have their biological father and a stepfather in their lives. She used her personal experiences as inspiration to write this title. I would use this text to teach comparing and contrasting characters “Dad is tall. Pop is not.” The illustrations by Paul Meisel could inspire children to participate in new activities with their parents. He use... mores great color and detail throughout the book. Dad and Pop demonstrates how a child positively deals with having a new father involved, and still maintains a strong relationship with the biological father.
review 2: Considering how many kids I know who have both a dad and a stepdad, this book will come in handy. The narrator has two special men in her life (not gay fathers, although the text would work for that situation as well) and rather than talk about the challenges of a divorce and remarriage, this simply focuses on how Dad and Pop are different in ways, similar in ways, both are fun, and both love the little girl. Nice. less
