review 1: A good read. A fun read. I've always been fascinated with women who where early settlers - leaving a familiar life and going into the unknown, enduring great hardships. They had to be a bit fearless - or in desperate situations as were some of the book's characters. So I enjoyed the time & setting and I felt the author did a nice job of revealing the characters as the story rolled out. I loved the author's description of real stories found in one of her resources about mail order brides. Fascinating! Even thought the ending had some "happily ever after" qualities to it, I LIKED the ending! I'd definitely read another novel by this author. I miss Clara and Elsa already.
review 2: This is probably my favorite of the past novels about mail order brides I have... more read. I listened to this on audio book and it kept me intrigued throughout. Clara Bixby,broke and deserted by her husband in Post Civil War era Manhattan Town (NY), reads a letter in the local paper from the Mayor of Destination, Nebraska asking for wives for the local male population and decides to become a marriage broker. She painstakingly lines up a group of honest, god-fearing women willing to go, matches them with the men who have written to her with a request for a wife, and after 6 months of letter writing between the proposed couples, She and the women head out on the train to Nebraska with high hopes and a prayer for luck. Needless to say, what ever can happen does and the whole venture teeters on the edge until, good sense,and a series of attitude adjustments saves the day. McNees sense of humor keeps the tale rolling along and there are some sweet romantic moments to savor. less
