review 1: The story line was pretty good. Early 19th century setting in New York, which was pretty cool. It allowed me to imagine how New York looked in it's early stages of life. It seems like there was always hustle and bustle, no matter the time. A famous London author and his wife travel to the States for a book tour. Their first stop is New York. During their stay a murder is committed not far from the hotel. Louisa, being the good wife as well as wanting to explore a little, decides to procure a newspaper for her husband. One of the errand boys of the hotel brings her a 'rag'. She decides not to give it to Arthur because he would not approve. The story of the murder catches her eye though. She finds herself captured by the horror of it, as a woman, it bothers her a ... morelot. Later she finds another paper that has a sketch and she recongizes the woman from the hotel when they checked in. By the time that Arthur is ready to leave, Louisa trips on the hotel rug and is instructed to forgo traveling by the doctor. The hotel puts her up since it was kind of their fault. Once her ankle gets a little better, she seeks the author of the article. She becomes obsessed with the murderer as there has been another murder, another woman, and Louisa really wants to see the offender caught. The lengths that Louisa goes through to try to force action from a corrupt police force is amazing, even in a time when women were not thought of as competent. However, I feel like I still had too many questions when this book was over.
review 2: I felt that this book was well researched and that the author did a wonderful job of creating time and place. The characters were also well drawn. This is not likely to be seen as great literature, but it's well written and a fun, easy read. I found myself caught up in the story very early in the book. My major criticism is that the descriptions of the crimes were much too graphic for my taste. I'm definitely a cozy reader in this regard! less
