review 1: This was rather a convoluted Phryne Fisher book, with an ever-growing cast of supporting characters. Kerry Greenwood filled this book with not one, not two, but at least five different mysteries, which felt like about two too many. If I were rating this within the Phryne Fisher pantheon, I would rate it a three-star book. Because Phyrne Fisher books are a superior series and an enjoyable read, this book deserves the fourth star.
review 2: As a lover of the ABC series Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries, I had high expectations for this one, and sadly I was somewhat disappointed. It felt like the mystery was only discussed in the first four and last four chapters, with everything in between just being irrelevant adventures. The book runs a bit like this 'People go
... moremissing, aha, a mystery to be solved! Oh wait, hang on, let's just spend the next week going to the beach and having dinner parties and spending time with surrealists for some unfathomable reason. Uhoh the books about to end quickly lets tie up all the loose ends and work out what happened!' But at the end of the day, I still love Phyrne, and it was a fun, easy to read, light-hearted book. less
