review 1: I am giving this book 5 stars because of a combination of the writing style and the story itself. The story is about a girl named Maeve who (seemingly for no particular reason) sets off across the country headed for California. She decides her route by finding towns with interesting names that she would like to travel through on her journey. Her car breaks down and leaves her stranded in a odd little town named Unknown. My first opinion of this book was that it was very strange and just kept getting more strange. And then I just got sucked in. Everyone in Unknown has a quirky name and everyone is quite original. Much to my surprise, I went from thinking what a strange little story this was to being suddenly in love with the whole town. It's a wonderful journey acro... moress the country and into the life of Maeve. It's a novel with a whimsical feel, yet a profound story.The writing of this story is amazing. It is witty and charming. Kerry Reichs' descriptions of the environment and of Maeve's experiences make you feel like you are actually in the story. At one point, I longed to be sitting in the grass on a sunny day enjoying the crispness of a bell pepper. Weird...but true. I absolutely loved her writing and it alone would give this book 5 stars. I will definitely read more by her in the future. I can't wait to see what else her writing brings!
review 2: I have been waiting for a good read for a while. This book would have been rated a five except a few things in the book can never happen in real life. I don't want to give them away and ruin the book for someone who hasn't read it yet. This is a great read. The author tied every detail of the book together at the end. I recommend this book. It's one of those books that you think about more after you finish it as opposed to while you are reading it. less
