review 1: I honestly have no words to even describe my feelings right now. I basically read the last half of this book in one sitting and boy am I glad I did because in doing so I could fully immerse myself in the story and really get my head wrapped around everything. So this wonderfully dark book tells the story of a young boy called Linus who is stuck inside an underground bunker, with no food, no friends and no privacy. The cameras watch his every move from each room and the only thing he knows is that the lights come on at a certain time in the morning, the lift doors open to reveal absolutely nothing and then in the evening the lights turn off.Until one day when the lift doors open and it isn't empty. I spent the entirety of this book trying to figure out who it was that put L... moreinus there, where exactly it was and whether he would manage to get out. Surprisingly for once I was glad that none of my questions were ever answered because it just felt more satisfying that way for some reason. The ending of this book left me with goosebumps all over my body and even though it was pretty disturbing and left extremely open ended, I loved it. It was just perfect and I'm still not over it. This was such a pleasant surprise after my last book-club book being such a disappointment. I cant see myself forgetting about this book any time soon. Kevin Brooks you're a genius. Although I may now have a fear of random blind people in the street that may or may not capture me and lock me in a bunker!
review 2: I'm not big on YA fiction but after having this recommended to me by a friend, I thought I'd give it a go. For the first 3/4 of the book I was thoroughly impressed; it's dark, twisted, claustrophobic and you find yourself both liking and disliking characters intensely. They're both believable and relatable, you feel as though you're stuck down there with them. However, the last portion of the book was a huge disappointment. The ending is anticlimactic and doesn't seem to answer anything. I was bracing myself for a shocking ending that never happened. The story had so much potential and it just fizzled out and left me with too many unanswered questions.Overall it's a good story, but the ending certainly let it down. less
