review 1: Confession--this was a book my husband INSISTED that I read, not one that I picked out by choice. I have to say that overall, I felt that Leman only made two valid points throughout the entire book, and that the rest was just filler (or letters from "grateful" readers, plugging this book). The first point that I felt merited some thought was to not encourage/engage in arguing with your child. Later, when they want some favor or treat, you say "no"--if they ask why, you explain--once--that you did not appreciate the way they spoke to you earlier. The second valid point, IMHO, was "B doesn't happen until after A"; obviously used for a variety of scenarios.I felt that most of this book was redundant after the first 1/3, merely hammering in points that the author already st... moreated. If you actually pay attention to what you're reading, you've already gotten his points by then. It was also filled with "real-life situations" to simulate the points, that I felt were a complete waste of time. After all, everyone's situation is different, and what someone else's child says to their mother isn't the same things my child are saying to me. The biggest turn off (after the redundancy factor), was the letters from people exclaiming how great the book is--seriously, if it is that great, I don't need 1/2 of the book filled with other people saying that--just give me the facts. For 2 valid points, not really recommended.
review 2: Lame title but decent book for the parenting shelf. The daily reference is really just a way of him organizing the process of taking a step by step approach to changing the way you parent. 2/3 of the book is the "Ask Dr. Leman" section with an alphabetical listing of common parenting challenges & his VERY quick response of what to do. It covers topics from little ones to teenagers. His descriptions of how to handle things at the first 1/3 of the book (89 pages) are heavy on looking at your own behavior, attitude and character before trying to change your kids. A potential handy reference book for the parenting shelf to pull down when having some challenges. Lots of references to things more appropriate for parents of pre-tweens. But, I'd also give this to a parent of a toddler looking for an approach & style they can use throughout all stages of childhood. I found it refreshing to have some pointers that really could work in any situation. Some of those are common sense, but isn't that really how all parenting books are - they point you back to what your gut is telling you often. Besides the Attitude, Behavior, Character ABC slogan, he has a chapter on Acceptance, Belonging, & Competence that I found interesting too. While Dr. Leman has a Christian faith that influences his writing & perspectives, this book doesn't get into that a ton. Definitely liked this book as more practical action/encouragement more than "what a difference a mom makes" also by him. less

Love his style of writing and he doesn't sugar coat anything. Some call it commonsense parenting.
