Books to Look out for: October 2017

As Autumn prepares to arrive, its time to think about cozying down in front of the fire and reading a great book. Here’s Love London Love Culture’s picks of the month…

1. Origin by Dan Brown: this is the fifth Dan Brown novel to feature Robert Langdon and this time sees the Harvard professor arriving at the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao to attend the unveiling of a discovery that “will change the face of science forever”. But just as it is about to be unveiled the evening explodes and sees Langdon on a chase to discover clues to unlock a powerful secret… (out 3rd October) 

2. Uncommon Type: Some Stories by Tom Hanks: the Oscar winning actor has written a collection of seventeen short stories about  friendships, families, love and normal, everyday behaviour. This is his first collection of fiction.  (Out 17th October) 

3. A Question of Trust by Penny Vincenzi: this latest novel from the author is a story of life-changing decisions, glamour, love, desire and conflict.

1950s London. Tom Knelston is charismatic, working class and driven by ambition, ideals and passion. He is a man to watch. His wife Alice shares his vision. It seems they are the perfect match.Then out of the blue, Tom meets beautiful and unhappily married Diana Southcott, a fashion model. An exciting but dangerous affair is inevitable and potentially damaging to their careers. And when a child becomes ill, Tom is forced to make decisions about his principles, his reputation, his marriage, and most of all, his love for his child.

4. Sleep No More by P.D. James: this latest collection of stories is a companion to the previous collection The Mistletoe Murder and Other Stories and contains six very different and gripping stories and are published for the first time.

As the six murderous tales unfold, the dark motive of revenge is revealed at the heart of each. Bullying schoolmasters receive their comeuppance, unhappy marriages and childhoods are avenged, a murder in the small hours of Christmas Day puts an end to the vicious new lord of the manor, and, from the safety of his nursing home, an octogenarian exerts exquisite retribution.

5. Ask an Astronaut by Tim Peake: this book is Tim Peake’s personal guide to life in space and answers questions such as How does it feel to orbit the earth ten times faster than a speeding bullet?What’s it like to eat, sleep and go to the toilet in space?And what’s next – the moon, Mars or beyond? (Out 19th October) 

6. How to be a Champion by Sarah Millican: this book written by the comedienne is part autobiography, part self-help and part confession. It is filled with stories and advice on how to get past life’s blips – like being good at school but not good at friends, the excitement of IBS and how to blossom post divorce. (Out 5th October)
